How Much Is Selenite Worth?
Also known as Satin Spar / Gypsum
Selenite is a translucent, pearly variety of gypsum, extremely soft (Mohs 2 — a fingernail can scratch it) and very inexpensive. Charging plates, wands, and tumbled pieces sell for $2–$25, carved lamps, towers, and large 'satin spar' logs for $15–$80, and fine clear crystal specimens or unusual formations (desert rose, fishtail twins, Cave of the Crystals-style blades) for more. Most of what's sold as 'selenite' in shops is technically satin spar, a fibrous chatoyant form with a silky sheen. Value comes from clarity, size, an attractive silky or glassy luster, and unusual crystal habit. Because the material is so abundant and cheap to mine (huge deposits in Morocco and Mexico), prices stay very low; selenite also dissolves in water, so it is never wet-tumbled or washed.

What drives selenite value
- Clarity / luster. Bright silky satin-spar sheen or glassy clear selenite is most attractive.
- Size & form. Large logs, towers, and unusual habits (fishtail, desert rose) add value.
- Workmanship. Well-carved lamps and bowls command more than rough pieces.
- Specimen quality. Undamaged clear crystals are prized by collectors.
Is your selenite real?
Selenite is cheap enough that outright fakes are uncommon; the main confusion is with other white stones. Genuine selenite/gypsum is extremely soft (Mohs 2) — a fingernail leaves a mark — feels slightly warm and light, and is water-soluble. Anything that resists a fingernail scratch is a harder mineral, not selenite.
FAQ
- Can selenite get wet?
- No — selenite is water-soluble gypsum; prolonged water contact clouds, pits, and eventually dissolves it. Clean it dry.
- Is selenite the same as satin spar?
- They're both gypsum; 'satin spar' is the common fibrous, silky-sheen form most 'selenite' products are made from, while true selenite is the clear/glassy crystal form.
