How Much Is Jade Worth?

Also known as Jadeite / Nephrite

'Jade' covers two different minerals — jadeite (rarer, harder, the source of top-value 'Imperial' green) and nephrite (tougher, more common, historically the Chinese classic). Prices span an enormous range: carved nephrite pendants and tumbled pieces sell for $10–$80, good translucent jadeite cabochons and bangles run $100–$2,000, and fine natural 'Type A' Imperial jadeite reaches tens of thousands to millions per piece at auction. The single biggest price driver is treatment: 'Type A' is natural and untreated, 'Type B' is acid-bleached and resin-impregnated, and 'Type C' is dyed — B and C are worth a small fraction of A. Beyond treatment, value follows color (even, vivid emerald-green tops the scale), translucency, texture, and workmanship. Because the fake and treatment problem is so severe, authentication matters here more than almost any other stone.

What drives jade value

  • Treatment (Type A/B/C). Untreated 'Type A' is worth many times bleached/dyed B or C jade.
  • Color. Even, vivid emerald-green ('Imperial') is the pinnacle; lavender and icy white also prized.
  • Translucency. Glassy, semi-transparent jade beats opaque, chalky material.
  • Texture & workmanship. Fine even grain and skilled carving add substantial value.

Is your jade real?

Much cheap 'jade' is dyed serpentine, aventurine quartz, dyed quartzite, or resin. Genuine jade is very tough, cool, dense, and gives a clear ringing 'clink' when tapped, not a dull plastic click. Dye concentrated in cracks, a warm/light feel, or a bargain price on 'Imperial' green all signal treated or imitation stone.

FAQ

Why is some jade worth thousands and some worth $20?
Natural untreated jadeite ('Type A') with even green color is scarce, while most affordable jade is nephrite or acid-treated/dyed jadeite worth far less.
What's the difference between jadeite and nephrite?
Jadeite is rarer and harder and produces top-grade Imperial green; nephrite is tougher and more common and was the classic historical jade of China and New Zealand.
