Real or Fake? How to Tell If Your Crystal Is Genuine

The crystal market is full of dyed stone, reconstituted material, lab-grown synthetics, and plain glass or plastic sold as the real thing. Some stones are faked far more than others — turquoise, moldavite, and opal especially. These guides cover the common fakes for each stone and the simple at-home tests that separate genuine specimens from imitations, so you know what you actually have before you buy or sell.

Is your amethyst real?

Amethyst is cheap enough that outright counterfeits are less common than two specific issues: dyed glass sold as amethyst, and synthetic (lab-grown) quartz. Both are physically 'real' material in a sense, but neither is natural amethyst, and glass is worth almost nothing.

Is your rose quartz real?

Because rose quartz is so cheap, the usual issue isn't an elaborate counterfeit but dyed quartz and pink glass sold as natural rose quartz — plus over-dyed material whose color is far more vivid than the real stone's soft, milky pink.

Is your citrine real?

With citrine the real question is usually not 'real or glass' but 'natural or heat-treated amethyst.' Both are genuine quartz, but natural citrine is far scarcer and worth more, so the distinction drives most of the price.

Is your clear quartz real?

Clear quartz is common and cheap, so the main authenticity question is simply quartz vs glass — glass beads, spheres, and 'crystal balls' are frequently sold as natural rock crystal.

Is your pyrite real?

The classic question with pyrite is the opposite of most stones: people want to know whether their 'gold' is real gold or just pyrite (fool's gold). The two are easy to tell apart with a few quick tests — and the value gap is enormous.

Is your turquoise real?

More than almost any other stone, 'turquoise' in the wild is often not natural turquoise at all. The big four issues are dyed howlite/magnesite, reconstituted ('block') turquoise, plastic imitation, and resin-stabilization of genuine but chalky stone.

Is your moldavite real?

Moldavite is the poster child for fakes: genuine material is restricted to one Czech location, so the flood of cheap 'moldavite' online is overwhelmingly molded green glass. Telling them apart is mostly about surface texture and provenance.

Is your malachite real?

Malachite is faked less often than turquoise, but two issues come up: reconstituted ('pressed') malachite made from powder and resin, and outright imitations in dyed howlite or green glass. The natural banding pattern is the best tell.

Is your opal real?

With opal, 'fake' usually means one of three things: a doublet/triplet (a sliver of real opal made to look like a solid stone), lab-grown synthetic opal, or imitation glass/plastic ('opalite'). Each changes value dramatically.

Is your obsidian real?

Obsidian is itself a natural glass, so the issue isn't 'glass vs stone' — it's man-made glass and slag sold as obsidian, especially for the pricier 'rainbow,' 'blue,' 'green,' and 'cherry' varieties, many of which are simply manufactured colored glass.

Is your tiger's eye real?

Tiger's eye is genuine quartz, but two things fool buyers: fiber-optic glass ('cat's-eye glass') sold as tiger's eye, and dyed or heat-treated color — especially red and blue — presented as natural.

Is your jade real?

Jade has one of the worst fake-and-treatment problems in the stone world. Two separate issues stack: outright imitations (dyed serpentine, aventurine, dyed quartzite, glass, plastic) and treatments of real jadeite ('Type B' acid-bleached + resin-filled, 'Type C' dyed) that look like natural jade but are worth a fraction.

Is your lapis lazuli real?

Lapis is frequently imitated or 'improved' because clean deep-blue material is scarce. The common issues are dyed pale/low-grade lapis, dyed howlite or jasper sold under trade names, and lab-made 'Gilson' synthetic lapis.

Is your carnelian real?

With carnelian the 'fake' issue is treatment, not glass. Most affordable carnelian is heat-treated or dyed agate/chalcedony — genuine quartz, but color-enhanced. Collectors pay more for naturally colored stone, so the distinction is a value question.

Is your jasper real?

Jasper is common and cheap, so it's seldom counterfeited outright — but dyed magnesite or howlite is sold as 'jasper,' and some low-grade material is dyed to fake vivid color. A few trade names ('sea sediment jasper,' 'impression jasper') are actually dyed, reconstituted stone rather than true jasper.

Is your agate real?

Agate itself is too cheap to fake, so 'fake agate' really means dyed agate: genuine banded chalcedony soaked in colored dye to produce the bright pinks, blues, greens, and purples seen on cheap slices and coasters. It's real stone with artificial color.

Is your aventurine real?

Aventurine is cheap and mostly genuine, so the real confusion is with man-made 'goldstone' (copper-fleck glass) sold as aventurine, and with green glass dyed to imitate the stone. It's also marketed misleadingly as 'Indian jade.'

Is your hematite real?

Hematite itself is cheap, so the 'fake' issue is specific: the hugely popular 'magnetic hematite' jewelry and magnets are almost always hematine — a man-made barium/strontium-ferrite ceramic — because natural hematite is only very weakly magnetic. It's an imitation of a cheap stone, but buyers still deserve to know.

Is your moonstone real?

Moonstone is widely imitated by 'opalite' — a milky, man-made glass — and by ordinary glass, because a strong natural blue sheen is scarce and valuable. The key is where the glow comes from: inside the stone (real) versus a flat surface shimmer (imitation).

Is your sunstone real?

The classic sunstone fake is man-made 'goldstone' — copper-fleck glass — sold as natural sunstone. The distinction matters most for pricier Oregon sunstone, where copper-bearing gem material commands real money and glass imitations are common.
